Meet The Shadow Man
over 3 years ago – Thu, Oct 15, 2020 at 03:33:09 PM

Las time around you got a chance to met Ada, and now it’s time for you to meet The Shadow Man! This nefarious character stalks you throughout your travels in the human realm.

Back during the initial concept phase for Sunshine Manor, we were looking for a villain that could be absolutely anywhere at any time, waiting, ready to strike. This naturally led us to thinking about the shadows inside Sunshine Manor, and a villain that would stalk you from the darkness.

Due to The Shadow Man’s otherworldly abilities, he had to have a look that captured his mysterious powers, so we took inspiration from the Hobgoblin from Spider-Man, Dracula, and a dash of Orko from He-Man!

As his name suggests, The Shadow Man lives in the shadows of Sunshine Manor, and will wait for players to come closer. If you’re not careful and walk near his location, he will rise from the shadows and give chase, which is not a good thing! The problem is that he’s slightly faster than Ada, so you’ll have to use the environment to slow him down for long enough to force him to give up the chase.

Ada can protect herself from The Shadow Man using her psychic abilities, but you can’t destroy him, so you’ll only be able to force him back into the darkness where he will bide his time until he can pounce again!

Fun Fact

At first, The Shadow Man was dressed as a creepy clown who wandered the hallways of the manor!

Did You Hear That!?

Welcome to a new update! After a great weekend, the Kickstarter campaign for Sunshine Manor is now over 60% funded!

Sound design in horror games is something that is often overlooked, but is one of the most important things we considered when we began to create Sunshine Manor. Once we had decided the game was going to be set within an abandoned mansion, the sound effects for this journey became very important.

For Sunshine Manor we engineered a custom convolution reverb system that makes all the sound effects in the game echo, to make them sound as they should in a location like the old Aitken House, with its sprawling corridors and spacious rooms - the impulse response for Sunshine Manor was recorded in an old church hall! That, coupled with dynamic audio positioning, in which objects make sounds in direct correlation to your location - makes the game ultra-spooky when you put on a pair of headphones.

For example, when Ada is pushing objects, it creates a sound that can echo off the walls around her, which makes it sound way cooler!

The problem for players is that The Shadow Man pays attention to these sounds! If he’s close by, and hasn’t seen you yet, he might pop his head around the corner to see if the noise he heard is that pesky child who’s ruining everything in the manor!

The Evolution of Ada
over 3 years ago – Fri, Oct 09, 2020 at 06:00:40 PM

Welcome to a new Kickstarter update! Today, we will be focusing on Ada, the main character for Sunshine Manor who you’ll be playing as. But before that, we want to thank everyone for bringing the total funding for Sunshine Manor to over 50% in only two days!

When we started to work on this prequel, we always had a clear idea of how the main character for Sunshine Manor would need to act as a counterpart to Jez from Camp Sunshine. We started to brainstorm different ideas. We tried everything, from a classic 1980s nerd to a jock - and even a cheerleader - but nothing really sat right with us. That was until Josh came up with little Ada, who perfectly fit the bill for a character that was unassuming yet with a hidden depth her.

It was right then and there that we found our heroine!

Because Ada was going to end up being smaller than Jez, we also had to find a way to give her the power to fight the various demons and bad guys she would run into within Sunshine Manor. Whilst it would have looked awesome to have Ada swinging a baseball bat, psychic powers became a better choice since this meant we could do so much more with a single gameplay mechanic. Psychic powers proved to be a great option, from puzzles to upgrades and more!

Fun Fact

Ada originally had black hair and dark blue clothes, but when we tested her out in the Manor, it became a little difficult to keep track of her in some of the darker areas. Not only can you actually see her now, we also love her new look!
